Why I Built OuroBite: A Free Marketplace for Local Sellers and Shoppers in Lahore

Rana Khurram Shahzad · Updated 5 Nov 2026

Before I started OuroBite, I used to pay attention to a small but frustrating difference. A meal could have one price at a restaurant and another when I looked it up online. Sometimes the difference was in the price of the food. Other times, the delivery charge was what made me reconsider the order. I liked being able to see what was available from my phone, but I kept wondering whether there was a simpler way to buy from a local business.

I thought about the seller, too. A restaurant has already paid for ingredients, staff and packaging by the time an order leaves the kitchen. When selling online adds another cost, the owner has to decide whether to absorb it or include it in the price. That decision can be especially difficult for a small shop that wants to reach new customers and still keep its prices reasonable.

Those observations led me to start OuroBite Private Limited in Lahore. I wanted to bring local sellers and shoppers together on a website they could both use for free. A seller could show people what they make and what they charge. A shopper could look around, find a business nearby and decide what was worth buying.

What “free” means on OuroBite

OuroBite charges sellers no registration fee, no product listing fee and no commission on sales. Shoppers can browse and use the website without paying OuroBite a platform fee.

The food and other products have their own prices. If delivery carries a charge, that is separate from using the platform. For a shopper, the figure that matters is the total cost of the order. That’s the amount I’d want to know before deciding whether to order a meal or pick it up myself.

Keeping OuroBite free was a decision about the kind of marketplace I wanted to build. Imagine a neighbourhood bakery that wants to put its savoury pastries online. The owner can take a few clear photos, show what’s available and give people a way to find the shop. That’s already work for someone who may also be opening the shop in the morning, checking stock and serving customers at the counter. I wanted the owner to be able to try selling through OuroBite without adding a registration bill or commission to those everyday costs.

If you run a food business in Lahore, you can start on the Register Your Store page.

What I want shoppers to find

People already have their favourite shops. You might know exactly where to get pulao for a family lunch or which bakery has the biscuits you like with tea. The harder part is finding something nearby when your usual shop is closed, when you’re in a different part of Lahore or when you want to try a place someone has recommended.

I want the Local Stores section to be somewhere you can look in those moments. For me, a useful listing answers the questions I would ask at the counter. What does the shop sell? How much does it cost? Is it close enough for the order to make sense? A clear photo and a straightforward description can help someone decide whether to try a seller for the first time.

Reasonable prices matter to me, and so does the quality of what people receive. A low price only tells you part of the story. If you’re ordering for a family, you also want to know what the portion includes and whether it suits the meal you’re planning. The easier it is to understand what a shop offers, the easier it is to choose something you’ll be happy to buy again.

Why we started in Lahore

Lahore is where I wanted to start because it’s the food market I know best. When people here recommend a place, they often recommend one particular thing. They’ll tell you which shop to visit for a certain kind of mithai or where to go when you want a good plate of pulao. A shop can be well known for one dish in its own neighbourhood and still be unfamiliar to someone a few streets away.

That’s the kind of gap I’d like OuroBite to help close. A small business should have a way to show what it does well to people who haven’t walked past its door. And someone looking for a new place should be able to learn enough about it to decide whether to order.

My plan is to take OuroBite to other cities across Pakistan over time. Starting in Lahore gives us a chance to see what people actually look for, where shoppers get stuck and what sellers need when they put their products online. Those are questions I’d rather answer by listening to the people using the site. What works for a bakery in Lahore may be different from what works for a seller in another city.

Where my food blogging fits in

I also make food videos and share recipes on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Some of that work happens in my kitchen. Some of it takes me to roadside stalls and local food shops, where I get to watch how people prepare the dishes they sell. I enjoy seeing the small decisions that go into a familiar dish, like when a cook turns down the heat or how they judge the rice before putting it on dum.

A video can show those details well. You can see how thick a karahi masala is before the cook takes it off the heat. But when you’re making dinner yourself and your hands are already covered in spices, it helps to have the ingredients and steps written out where you can find them quickly.

That’s why I wanted Recipes, Food Tips and Articles to have a place on OuroBite. I can share the full method for a dish I’ve cooked, explain why biryani rice sometimes turns mushy, or write about a food stall whose cooking caught my attention. Sometimes a reader needs a full recipe. Sometimes they just want to know whether they should add the tomatoes now or give the meat a few more minutes. There’s room on the site for both.

If you’re in Lahore and looking for something to buy, have a look at the local stores on OuroBite. If you sell something you’d like more people to know about, you can register your store. And if you came here after watching one of my videos, the recipe section is a good place to start.
